The “Progressive Bogeyman” & Healthcare: My Favorite Constitutional Changes and Amendments – Ladies, this is directed at YOU! (Uh, and you guys too.)

Folks, there have been 27 changes (Amendments) to our U.S. Constitution over the years – on average one amendment every decade.  Yup, progressive efforts to address needed change where and when it needed to happen.  It’s called “PROGRESS” and I embrace it, and so did our founding fathers and our nation (Washington, Jefferson, Hamilton, Madison, etc. etc.) this is self-evident.  Progress - it is deliberately engineered into our American Constitution because our founders knew with time circumstances would change and they could not be hamstrung from making necessary improvements when the situation called for it.  Progress folks – yup, progress.  It was progress and progressive efforts by definition that gave you the right to keep and bear arms – not the Constitution.  It was progressive efforts that gave our ladies a voice and the right to vote via the 19th Amendment – not the Constitution.

So, here are my top 10 favorite Amendments.  They set the stage for my appeal to our fair ladies who want something better for their families.  They underscore the fact that progressive efforts have changed our U.S. Constitution ever since we became a country. None of them were designed to tyrannize or take away from our freedoms and rights. They were designed to enhance our experience as citizens of the United States without infringing on our Constitution.  Progressive change began with our founding fathers when they drafted the Constitution and has continued since:

1.        Progressive Amendment 1: Freedom of Speech / Assembly / Press / Religion (1791): I could not write this piece without it.

2.        Progressive Amendment 2: Bearing Arms (1791): It helps keep government able to muster an army - and from overreaching its authority.

3.        Progressive Amendment 4: Search and Seizure (1791): Keeps the government out of my business.

4.       Progressive Amendment 6: Right to a speedy public trial: No disappearances in the night.

5.        Progressive Amendment 10: State and Federal Rights: A lesson learned hard by our current president – the Feds and President do NOT have absolute power.

6.       Progressive Amendment 13 (1865): Abolishment of Slavery.  If only it could have been feasible to abolish it in 1781 when the Bill of Rights was ratified.

7.        Progressive Amendment 15 (1870): Citizens Right to Vote.  Yup, we don’t like kings and dictators (or presidents & parties that masquerade as such).

8.       Progressive Amendment 19 (1920): Women’s Right to Vote.  Crazy we even needed an amendment for this – right?

9.       Progressive Amendment 22 (1951): President Tenure.  Keeping the Putan’s and other “elected” dictators out.

10.   Progressive Amendment 26 (1971): 18-year old’s the Right to Vote – You can be drafted and serve in the military; therefore, you should get a vote.

I have to throw an honorable mention to Progressive Amendment 21 which repealed the 18th Prohibition Amendment. Hey, I too enjoy a beer with friends now and then and a glass of wine with good company at dinner too.

I am not an advocate for flippant Constitutional change. I do not consider myself a liberal, or a conservative, or a progressive. I consider myself a simple patriotic American who wants what’s best for our families and country.  In fact, I spent my life honoring my oath to support and defend it.  So, for those who continue to beat this drum of disapproval for whom they label as progressives and vilify those responsible for the ideas that have amended America’s Constitution 27 times since its June 21, 1788 inception - and subsequently changed 2.5 years later with the first “progressive” 10 amendments ratified in December, 15, 1791 – yup, progress folks – the Bill of Rights – yeah baby (https://constitutioncenter.org/blog/the-day-the-constitution-was-ratified), I say stop being used and manipulated as unsuspecting dupes and mouth pieces by those who impassion you in order to hold on to power at you and your neighbors expense out of the fear of the “Progressive Bogeyman” they create in some of our Americans minds.  I don’t make this stuff up (and no one can make a run-on sentence like me, right!?).

If you disagree, well then, I say come on down to The Mad Moose, Utah Bull Moose Party Headquarters, and let’s plot the plan to start with rolling back the previous Constitutional amendments like the right to keep and bear arms. Then, let’s take away the right of ladies to vote. And lets discontinue Social Security for all the Americans who depend on it too (I know, that was not quite an amendment).  While we’re at it, let’s take away free speech too – and all the rest of the progressive amendments to the Constitution that some Americans so fervently object to.  Otherwise, I say, put a freakin’ cork in your pie-hole until you are ready to be a part of the solutions dialog that we need because there are Americans out there that need your help (I say that with love - smiles).  Beware, I say, of the uninformed, or those who would manipulate you with motives to muzzle and vilify efforts to discuss pragmatic solutions to America’s problems that need attention.

For you ladies, I ask why are you voting for a party that hates progress (Republicans?).  Really, why?  It was a progressive idea of, God forbid, giving woman the right to vote that now gives you a voice.  Ladies, why would you ever think about supporting a party that so vilifies progress?  You are the care givers.  You’re the ones that take care of the kids and family and worry about their health (let’s not get into a gender roles discussion here – that’s not my point).  Yet, you ladies continue to vote for leadership that makes you choose between your family’s health and financial despair.  I ask you then, why would fully half of our population, ladies, who have a voice and can vote, continue to vote for either party if you had a viable alternative candidate that truly puts your family interests first?  Why?  I certainly know you care.

The obvious answer is of course, you wouldn’t, and you do care.

What do you say… lets figure out healthcare once and for all.  Whether it be a Constitutional Amendment, pressure to withhold federal funding to states to make necessary improvements to healthcare, or a vehicle like the Social Security Act, the Federal Government can be improved without undermining or eroding our Constitution.  And you, ladies, can make that change happen.  Would you let me help be part of the solution?

So a time will come in 18 months. You may not say or admit it for fear of retribution in your family, your community, your church - it’s okay.  But when you go into that voting booth in November of 2022, you will have the chance to say “I want better for my family” and you’ll pull that lever, press that button, color that dot, mail that ballot, whatever, and you will vote Colonel Michael “Mike” Seguin, Utah Bull Moose Party.  You will do this because you know I will do my best to make certain intelligent change that assures your family will not have to choose between financial ruin, and the health of your kids.  And when you come out of that booth, you can say with confidence you did not vote for that radical COL Seguin to your family and friends, but be secretly confidant knowing you in fact did vote for your family’s health, the Utah Bull Moose Party, and COL Michael “Mike” Seguin.

No one has to know it was YOU that made the difference.
